Project Title
A Day In The Life...
Description
To promote teaching green, I would get students involved in creating videos of what we already do well within our school, and videos to show we can improve our carbon footprint. Students will create one-minute tips on improving our carbon footprint here at school and at home. These videos can be shown on our TV network and embedded on our school web page. Students will use the camera to shoot "A day in the life of"
How will I use the money:
I would like to use the funds to help pay the conference fee ($270) to attend the NECC in Washington DC. While there, I will be focusing on emerging technologies that cut out paper, classroom waste and the amount of energy used by education. As an example, I have signed up for workshops that show teachers how to use primary sources in teaching which can help eliminate carbon emissions by doing virtual field trips.
Who will benefit:
At this point in my career I have several different groups of people that will benefit. First the students at our school who will be a part of creating the videos, will benefit, as will the students of our district. I will present the student videos at our district tech meeting to show the other building technology teachers so they can then, show the student green video on their school TV prgram. Second, I teach graduate courses for Wilkes University. They are primarily technology integration courses and inserting a lesson on teaching green would fit very well into the course. Third, I am part of DiscoveryEducation Network of STAR educators. As part of the PA Leadership team we plan events for teachers all the time. This could be a part of one of our Days of Discovery. And finally, I will post all of the information on my professional blog.
Where:
I teach the Wilkes U graduate classes in my classroom from Unionville-Chadds Ford School District. This classroom is located in Unionville, Pennsylvania at the Charles F. Patton Middle School.
When will my project take place:
Students will be instructed during the first marking period on how to create a video and will create their video by the middle of November.
How will you use the FlipCam to document your idea?
First I will interview teachers at NECC from all over the country about what they do to eliminate waste in their classrooms and school. Secondly, I want to lend the camera to students to create videos about what is happening around our school that is good for the resources and what improvements can be made. Student perspective on the environment can have a totally different point of view than the teacher's.
Why I want to do this:
It is important to promote summer of learning because I believe it is essential that teachers get refreshed, and spend time with colleagues or creating projects. In addition, I believe it is important for the community, in which we work, to know that teachers are learners too. In addition creating and sharing project ideas, we help one another.
